I despise patriotism.
I don’t believe in nationalism.
Yet, at the moment, I’m responsible for a Merdeka and Hari Malaysia ad campaign at my advertising agency.
Hypocrite?
Well, not entirely true, and factually impared.
I believe that He gives me a talent and a skill and I have the obligation to use it the best that I can. Don’t you agree? Mind you, I still need bucks to pay the rents and bills as well. You can’t put the blame entirely on me, it’s how our world and it’s clockwork system works. It’s kinda a catch-22 situation. Furthermore, these days everyone’s a hypocrite, it’s either they have the courage to admit it or not. I know I’m not one of those confused herds. In my case, I’m more or less a prostitute rather than a hypocrite. Selling a piece of my soul for a bowl of rice. ‘Jual daki tuk sesuap nasi’, as the title of my favorite track from Hark! It’s a Crawling Tar-Tar, one of my favorite band as well.
On second thought, you can call me hypocrite. People tend to label others as they please, so why bother to stop? A deceiver sounds nice, phony or sham might do the job as well. Hey, while we’re at it, how bout a Communist? Malaysians will scare the shit out if they heard that word. The media loves it, they never stop repeating that word for past few days. The same old brainwashing scare tactic over and over again, it never gets old. It do works though, for illiterate dumbfucks who believe everything their idiot box said, that is. I pity them. But, whatever it is, it still won’t change the fact that I loathe patriotism and nationalism as I am 19 minutes ago.
So how can we be sincere, upright and stay true to ourself and what we believe?
Easy.
Be alone. That is the only time you’re being yourself and not what others expect you to be. As soon as a second person enters, hypocrisy begins.
